Types of Appliances
The following paragraphs describe the types of additional appliances that may be used during your treatment.

Elastics (Rubber Bands)
Wearing elastics (rubber bands) improves the fit of your upper and lower teeth.

Headgear
Headgear is used to treat patients needing considerable bite correction. A headgear is generally used to restrict the growth of the upper jaw, but there is also a type of reverse headgear that is used to bring the upper jaw forward in the case of an underbite.

MARA
A MARA (Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance) is used as an auxiliary to correct severe overbites (Class II malocclusions).

Palatal Expander
The palatal expander widens your upper jaw by putting gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. Dr. Waldman will instruct you as to when and how to adjust your expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you will wear the appliance for several months to solidify the expansion and to prevent relapse.

Positioners
Positioners may be used to complete the final tooth movement in your orthodontic treatment. With your full cooperation, you should only need to wear the positioner appliance for four to eight weeks.

Retainers
Retainers may be removable or fixed. They hold your teeth in their new, corrected positions after your teeth have been straightened. Dr. Waldman will instruct you on how to care for your retainer and about the duration of the wear. Wearing your retainer as directed is crucial to prevent relapse of your treatment. Click here for more information on how to care for your retainer.

Separators (or Spacers)
Separators are little rubber rings that are placed between your teeth to push them apart so that orthodontic bands may be placed at your next appointment. The separators will be removed before we place the bands.

TPA (Trans-Palatal Arch)
A TPA is a bar which fits along your palate (the roof of the mouth) and is attached to the first molar bands in the upper arch. A TPA may be used for a variety of reasons, including molar rotation and vertical control of the molars.
