The Clear Aligner Treatment Process
Wondering how it all works? Below, you can learn what to expect during your clear aligner treatment.
Initial Consultation
At your first visit, Dr. Waldman will take the time to get to know you, examine your smile, and take digital images to fully understand your needs. He’ll create a custom treatment plan just for you. We will walk you through everything from how your aligners will work to what you can expect financially. You'll have plenty of time to ask questions and feel confident about your next steps.
The Treatment Plan
Based what was found during your exam, Dr. Waldman will develop a comprehensive, customized clear aligner treatment plan that will chart the precise movements of your teeth at each stage and the approximate duration of your treatment. Using the details of this plan and your digital impressions, your clear aligners will be made at a lab using 3D printing technology.
Wearing Your Aligners
Throughout your treatment, you’ll wear your aligners daily, taking them out only for meals and routine oral care—about two hours total per day. You’ll switch to a new set of aligners about once a week, with each one bringing you closer to your beautifully aligned smile as your teeth gradually shift into place.
Appointments With Us
Throughout your clear aligner treatment, you'll visit our office periodically for checkups. During these appointments, Dr. Waldman will assess your progress, and make adjustments to your treatment plan as needed. Please also feel free to use these appointments to ask us any questions you may have about your clear aligner treatment.
Enjoy & Maintain
You've made it to the end of treatment – congratulations! It's time to enjoy your new straight smile. At your final clear aligner appointment with your orthodontist, we'll review the progress your smile has made. Dr. Waldman will prescribe retainers to maintain your teeth in their current positions.

Questions About Clear Aligner Treatment? We've Got Answers.
If you're considering clear aligners, there's a lot to learn. You probably have lots of questions. Read through our clear aligner FAQs to learn more about this orthodontic treatment.
-
What are clear aligners?
Clear aligner orthodontic treatment is comprised of a series of clear, custom aligners designed to straighten teeth without metal wires or brackets.
Using advanced 3D computer imaging technology, our orthodontist Dr. Waldman will create a personalized treatment plan to address your smile's specific needs.
Your clear aligners will then be manufactured to fit your unique smile during each stage of the treatment process.
- Which brands of clear aligners do you offer?
- What are the primary features of clear aligners?
-
How do clear aligners work?
Clear aligner treatment is broken down into a series of clear plastic aligners, with each set designed to apply controlled pressure to your teeth to slowly shift them into place. You will wear each aligner for about two weeks (or as prescribed by your orthodontist) before replacing it with the next one in the series, which will pick up where the last one left off.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their prescribed, corrected positions.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The answer to this question will depend on the nature and severity of your misalignment. Each case is different.
Dr. Waldman will provide you with an accurate estimate of the length of your treatment based on a detailed evaluation of your teeth and bite during your initial consultation.
-
How long does clear aligner treatment take?
Your orthodontist will determine the approximate duration of your clear aligner treatment based on your smile's specific needs.
Factors that affect the duration of treatment include the nature and severity of the misalignment of your teeth or jaw. This determines the amount of movement that will be required to correct the problem, and how many aligners you will need to go through to accomplish this.
-
What are clear aligners made of?
Clear aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high-molecular-weight polyurethane resins that are BPA-free.
-
Can adults use clear aligners?
Absolutely! There is no upper age limit for clear aligner treatment. Almost anyone with healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for clear aligners.
In fact, many adults are opting to undergo orthodontic treatment with clear aligners because of the convenience of being able to remove them to eat, and to brush and floss, and because they are barely noticeable in your mouth.
-
Can teenagers use clear aligners?
Yes! Many teens are great candidates for clear aligners. In fact, there are clear aligners that are designed to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
For instance, clear aligners for teens have compliance indicators (tiny blue dots that fade away after they have been worn consistently for two weeks) to help teens keep track of their treatment and when they need to be changed.
They also come with eruption tabs for tweens and younger teens whose adult teeth are still growing in. These tabs provide space for second molars and prevent them from growing crooked.
-
How will clear aligners fit my lifestyle?
Like any orthodontic treatment, clear aligners take a bit of getting used to at first. But we believe you will find that clear aligner treatment fits very comfortably into your daily routines.
Because clear aligners can be removed whenever you need to eat, drink, brush and floss, there are no dietary restrictions associated with treatment, and you can maintain your normal oral hygiene routine.
Since the aligners are made of lightweight, clear plastic, they are almost invisible when worn, meaning your orthodontic treatment won't be that apparent to anyone but you.
-
How often do I have to visit the orthodontist with clear aligners?
One of the major benefits of clear aligner treatment is fewer in-office visits. With the Dental Monitoring app, Dr. Waldman is able to closely monitor your treatment progress every week—virtually.
This means you can continue moving forward with your smile transformation while staying connected and guided by Dr. Waldman, all from the comfort of your home
-
How often do I have to change my clear aligners?
When you start treatment, Dr. Waldman will tell you exactly how often you should switch out your aligners. The frequency varies from patient to patient, but it's normally weekly.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
You will remove your aligners to eat throughout your clear aligner treatment, so there aren't any dietary restrictions with clear aligners.
We recommend taking your aligners out to drink any beverages other than water (pop, coffee, juice, Slurpees, etc.) to avoid staining and so that sugars and acids don't get trapped between the aligners and your teeth.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
There are a few different steps involved when it comes to keeping your clear aligners clean, but all in all it's pretty simple.
Rinse them off each time you take them out of your mouth to wash away dry saliva and plaque that may be beginning to develop.
Clean your aligners thoroughly each day using a soft toothbrush and some clear anti-bacterial soap or toothpaste. Be sure to brush your aligners gently so as not to scratch them. Once your aligners are clean, rinse the soap off thoroughly with cool water. Then you're done!
In addition to cleaning the aligners themselves, you should be extra careful to make sure that your mouth is nice and clean before you put them back in. This means brushing and flossing after each meal to ensure that no food particles get stuck between your teeth and the aligners. Trapped particles and bacteria can lead to bad breath, cavities and gum disease.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Whenever they aren't in your mouth, or soaking in cleaning solution, store your clear aligners in the case they came with. This will keep them safe and clean until it is time to put them back in.
-
Can I play sports with clear aligners?
Clear aligners are removable so you can play sports without worrying about damaging them.
However, keep in mind that in order to keep treatment on track, clear aligners must be kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day (or as prescribed by your orthodontist), so plan your time carefully.
If you're going to be playing sports during your orthodontic treatment, it's important to invest in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth. Orthodontic treatment causes your teeth to loosen slightly as they shift into their new positions, and this can make them more susceptible to damage than they normally are.
-
Can I play my woodwind or brass instrument with clear aligners?
Yes! Simply remove your aligners to play your instrument, and pop them back in when you're done.
Keep in mind that you must keep your clear aligners in for about 22 hours a day (or as prescribed by Dr. Waldman), so be sure to plan your practice time carefully.
-
Clear aligners vs. braces: which is right for me?
Clear aligners and braces are both effective orthodontic treatment options, but there are differences between them that may affect their suitability for different individuals.
Factors to consider when choosing between clear aligners and braces include esthetics, your personal preferences and lifestyle, and the nature and severity of your misalignment.
Your orthodontist will assess your specific case and recommend the best treatment option for your needs.
