Teeth Whitening FAQs
Considering whitening your smile but still have questions? Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening after orthodontic treatment.
-
Can I get my teeth whitened right away after orthodontic treatment?
Our orthodontist recommends waiting a few weeks after having your braces removed before whitening your teeth. This will give you time to adjust and get comfortable with the feeling of your new appliance-free smile.
Once your braces have been removed, you'll want to pay extra attention to your oral hygiene. If you can reduce built up plaque on your own, it may improve some discoloration naturally. Regardless, a plaque-free smile will respond better to whitening treatments if you do choose to go ahead with this.
-
How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?
Teeth whitening is not permanent. Pigmented foods and beverages, such as coffee, berries, cola, beets, curries and more, can cause staining over time. Your diet, oral hygiene practices, and other factors can greatly affect how long your whitening treatment lasts. Many people choose to have their whitening treatment touched up a year or so after the initial procedure.
-
Will my insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?
Unfortunately, most dental insurance policies will not cover the cost of teeth whitening.
-
Will teeth whitening make my teeth more sensitive?
One short-term side effect of teeth whitening is increased sensitivity. This sensitivity usually fades away a few days following the procedure, and can be mitigated by using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste for a few weeks before and after treatment.
-
Does teeth whitening work on all stains?
Typically, brown and yellow stains respond the best to teeth whitening treatments. However, there are some stains that do not respond to whitening at all.
Speak to your orthodontist about whether teeth whitening is right for you.
-
Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?
No. Teeth whitening is only effective on natural teeth and will not whiten existing dental restorations such as dental fillings, bonding, crowns, or veneers.
If you have crowns, veneers, or other restorations, speak to your orthodontist to determine the best way to achieve the results you are after.
-
Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?
When used under the supervision of a qualified dental professional, teeth whitening is unlikely to damage tooth enamel. Consult your orthodontist to ensure you are using whitening products safely. If you experience any pain, sensitivity, or discomfort, let Dr. Waldman know right away.
